Kristina's Mt. Shasta Climb to 14,162 ft!
Dear Friends,
As my Mt. Shasta fundraising climb for Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) non-profit approaches, I am excited and exhilarated about the physical and mental challenge that lie ahead. I've been training with friends and in the process seen some beautiful national and state parks of Northern California -Desolation Wilderness in Tahoe, Mt. Lassen and this weekend, Mt. Diablo. All of this has helped prepare me for the upcoming backpack trip on Mt. Shasta -- the second highest volcano in the continental US. Starting at 7,000 ft, I'll hike up to our 10,000 ft base camp at the edge of the Hotlum glacier. I will then attempt to climb up to 14,162 ft with crampons and ice pick in hand! But not to worry, we've got experienced Shasta Mountain Guides(TM) to help lead our expedition and reach the goal safely. My second challenge combined with this amazing feat is to raise $2,500 within a very short time and I hope that you will be able to support me and the cause at hand... Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) is a fantastic organization that has helped get over 1,000 youth in the Bay Area out into the beautiful nature of California. Its model is based on that of the Appalachian Mountaineering Club. BAWT teaches youth not only about respect for and the importance of our environment, but also respect for team-work and self-esteem -- building stronger character and a sense of true achievement having pushed oneself beyond one's comfort zone. How does BAWT do this, you ask? BAWT trains teachers and youth workers to lead safe wilderness experiences with their own youth. By training adults who already have a trusting relationship with their urban and at-risk youth, BAWT gets exponentially more kids outdoors. It has served more than 1,300 youth in its short three year history. Another unique and crucial service BAWT provides is FREE backpacking equipment to groups who have gone through their Wilderness Leadership Training course - thereby reducing the gear barrier for kids to get outdoors. The beauty of my Mt. Shasta climb is that my experience will be so closely mirrored to that of a youth who goes out on his/her first camping trip through BAWT. Although I've been camping, I've never hiked with crampons on a glacier, nor tested my high altitude abilities above 10,500 ft. -- a fact that is a bit out of my normal comfort zone and will be a true test of stamina, agreable nature and team work. I ask you, therefore, to please support me and this effort in making a donation that extends beyond your potential comfort zone - as a means of sharing the experience :). Any donation is fully tax deductable. As a reward, you will not only have the knowledge of supporting a great cause but also the pleasure of enjoying an evening at my home viewing the video of my Mt Shasta climb. If you wish to donate, please click on the 'donate' button on the left nav bar for instructions. Thanks so much! Kristina |
